RN to BSN, Sample Personal Statement of Purpose

UXXX is my first choice for graduate school because I see it as the optimal springboard for making the best progress towards the realization of my long-term goals in nursing. I could not be more favorably impressed with the sheer excellence of your program: the education that I hope to receive at UXXX’s RN-to-BSN Program with its focus on quality instructors, pertinent skills, and practice trends. Fourteen years of nursing experience and a unique perspective have prepared me to bring a mature and well-rounded perspective to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s Family Nurse Practitioner program, making importance contributions to discussions. I very much look forward to earning my Master’s Degree in Nursing and putting it to a lifetime of good use as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Central to my long-term plans is serving as an agent of progressive change for enhanced levels of community health nursing, one individual at a time.


With more than four years of nursing experience in support of family practice nursing, I have a strong base upon which to continue to build and work towards becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner. I keenly look forward to a long and highly productive professional lifetime giving my all to the improvement of patient outcomes in a wide variety of settings - primary, emergency and urgent, inpatient, home health, and long-term. I have developed a keen understanding of how to best navigate the medical system that will help me to excel in the program. My extensive experience spans disparate populations - pediatric through geriatric – and patients from quite different socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. I grew up in rural Louisiana and while there was plenty of love, the familial culture included a distrust of and an aversion to the medical establishment. Fortunately, through exposure to outstanding medical care in college and the military, I came to recognize the power and benefit of seeking and adhering to professional medical advice. I found myself drawn toward health promotion for myself, my family, and my community – fostering an atmosphere of understanding of and trust in medical care. In each healthcare setting and even in difficult situations, I am always enthused to meet a patient and their support network no matter what the circumstances. Earning my Master’s degree at UXXX will allow me to maximize my contribution to nursing and gradually assume higher levels of responsibility and broadening the scope of practice – all the while honing what I like to think of as natural skills. Dedicated as much to prevention as I am to treatment, harnessing and encouraging the health potential of each individual, I want to bring the science of health to bear on the reality of humanity. As a college student and even before, I became keenly interested in the nexus of people and medical science, especially how applying research can improve health outcomes. Yet while methodical application of best practices is essential, I see partnering with patients as equally important. It was my compassion for patients that led me most of all to the nursing profession, which in turn led me to discover my talent and passion for health promotion. The most rewarding moments for me as a nurse are those in which I assist a patient with identifying their personal health goals and with plotting a realistic path to their definition of best possible outcomes. Very drawn to process improvement. I've worked on LEAN teams in the hospital and loved it. I always seek to facilitate a positive outcome through empathy.

It is critically important to attract underrepresented groups into nursing According to an April 2000 report prepared by the National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice, a culturally diverse nursing workforce is essential to meeting the health care needs of the nation's population because minority nurses are significant contributors to the provision of health care services in this country and leaders in the development of models of care that address the unique needs of minority populations. With a deepening nursing shortage, the need to attract nontraditional students into nursing and expand the capacity of baccalaureate programs is greater than ever before. Programs need to do more to recruit men and minority students into their degree programs by using a combination of traditional marketing methods, targeted outreach campaigns, and strategic planning. Nursing school must rise to the occaion to meet the challenge of expanding student diversity and eliminating barriers.
